10. Cyrus Granville Baker
was born on 18 Oct 1866 in Lincoln County, KY. He died on 28 Jul 1937 in
Harriman, TN. He was buried on 31 Jul 1937 in Walnut Hill Cemetary, Harriman,
TN. In the June 1923 elections (for mayor of Harrriman) Hannah sought a third
term but lost to C. G. Baker.
Cyrus Granville Baker was born October 18, 1870 in Lincoln County, Kentucky,
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah Baker. His father had been a captain in the
Union Army. He received his education in the public schools of Lincoln County.
In 1890 he married Annie Butler of his home county and five years later they
came to Harriman and he entered the jewelry business which he continued until
his death in 1937.
At one time he was a director in the old Harriman Hotel Company and also of Watts
Cooperage Company. He was president for several years of the Harriman Publishing
Company, which owned The Harriman Record in the period 1920-1927. He was an
elder in the First Christian Church and served as chairman of the church board
and super- intendent of the Sunday school for many years. He served a number
of years on the Harriman City School Board. He was a Mason, a Shriner, and a
member of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics.
In 1925 he sought re-election but was defeated by J. G. D'Armond by a margin
of forty votes. In 1927, however, he ran again and defeated D'Armond, and in
1929 he was re-elected over two opponents, D'Armond and Albert F. Littleton.
In 1931 and 1933, he declined to run. In 1935 he ran again but was defeated
by Harry L. Durell.
He died at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28, 1937, at his home, a week after suffering
a stroke of paralysis. At the time of his death his survivors included his wife;
three sons, W. A. Baker of Ashland Kentucky, Charles Baker of Sweetwater, Tennessee,
and James H. Baker of Harriman; and three daughters, Mrs. John R. Davis and Mrs.
Winston Sanders, both of Harriman, and Mrs. Stanley Staples of Cleveland, Tennessee.
The vote in the 1925 election was 362 for Baker and 402 for D'Armond. He was
married to Mary Ann Butler in 1890 in Lincoln County, KY.
